HAPPY ANNIVERSARY NEW YORK! It was one year ago yesterday that same sex marriage in New York took effect. There are estimates that about 11,500 same sex couples have gotten married over the past year. New York State is the largest and most influential state where same sex marriage is legal and its passage gave us a lot of us hope that this was the momentum we needed to boost national acceptance. In one week we had President Obama make his historical announcement declaring that he would personally support same sex marriage while North Carolina voted to ban all rights for gay couples in their state constitution. Remember 32 states have written into their state constitutions that marriage is ONLY between a man and a woman….we still have a lot of work a head.

Last Friday’s massacre in Aurora, CO really upset me but the fact that neither Obama nor Romney mentioned “gun control” has me infuriated. Here’s some simple facts….Japan had 7 homicides by guns, Germany 39, England 23 and here in America we had almost 12,000…There’s a 9 gram per person per month limit on Sudafed but someone can buy 6,000 rounds of ammunition on line! I just don’t get it …that the hell is wrong with this country? Why would anyone need an assault weapon? I’m outraged and frustrated by the ignorance of our government. I’m also proud that Mayor Bloomberg is one of the few politicians with a set of balls big enough to stand up and speak out against gun violence.
Another intelligent American put his foot in his mouth… Dan Cathy president of Chick-fil-A came out with a statement supporting traditional marriage….he affirmed his belief that “the biblical definition of the family unit,” Take a minute and sign the petition on Causes.org that is sponsored by the Trevor Project, the national organization focused on suicide prevention efforts for LGBT youth. The pledge reads….”Until your company’s values reflect the freedoms and dignities that all American citizens are due, we will no longer eat at Chick-fil-A!” Also there is a national protest against Chick-fil-A schedule for Wednesday, August 1st.
Yesterday Sally Ride the first female U.S. astronaut lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. Her obituary announced, that she is survived by “Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years.”…. and with that simple statement Sally Ride came out.
