(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (6pm) Mayra Lazara Dole’s novel, Down to the Bone, gives us a look at the disenfranchisement of gay and lesbian teens, particularly in the Cuban community. Seventeen year-old Laura has fallen in love with Marlena. They have been involved in a committed relationship for two years, however, neither of their families knows. That all changes when Laura is caught reading a love letter from Marlena by one of the nuns at her Catholic high school. Not only does the nun retrieve the letter, she reads it to the entire class. Down to the Bone was nominated for ALA Best Book 2009, garnered a Starred Booklist review, and was submitted to the National Book Awards. ($10) Event Website
(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (6pm) The Castle is a vividly honest account of how four New Yorkers came to be involved in crime and their transition from prison to society. The play is now enjoying a limited Off-Broadway professional engagement at the New World Stages Theater. The Castle is the residential facility run by The Fortune Society for ex-convicts re-entering society. In the play four formerly incarcerated people tell their stories from childhood to prison to redemption. In conversation with David Rothenberg, cast member Casimiro Torres will tell his own real-life story. ($10) Event Website
(Rattlestick Theater, 224 Waverly Place, New York, NY 10014) (7pm) Terrence McNally's play, Corpus Christi, returns to the stage in remembrance of Matthew Shepard's death, which garnered national attention to violence and hate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
