Vibrate

Sending vibrations out across New York City, new South African freedom songs sit side by side with the American Premier of works by Latvian composer Emils Darzins; Rufus Wainwright rubs up against Gwen Stefani, and there will also be new commissions by Our Lady J and Vermont-based composer Gwyneth Walker. A Cockette Symposium

(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (7:30pm) Join the largest New York gathering of Cockettes since their theatrical catastrophe at the Anderson Theater in 1971. In 1968 this psychedelic-fueled, gender-bending troupe of men, women, children, gay, straight and in-between, became legendary for their performances at San Francisco�s Palace Theater. At the cultural forefront of gay liberation, these bearded hippie drag queens showed generations to come the creative potential within us all. Moderated by Steven Watson, chronicler of the American avant garde, and hosted by John Waters� Superstar Mink Stole and HRH Lee Mentley of the Hula Palace, the evening promises to be historic. BABA, Black Artists' Expressions of Father Group Show

Polaroids: Mapplethorpe

(Whitney Museum of American Art, 945 Madison Ave at 75th St, New York, NY 10021) This special exhibition traces Robert Mapplethorpe's use of instant photography from 1970 to 1975. Included are self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and portraits of lovers and friends including Patti Smith, Sam Wagstaff, and Marianne Faithfull. Many of these small, intimate photographs convey tenderness and vulnerability. Others depict a toughness and immediacy that would give way in later years to more classical form. Unlike the highly crafted images Mapplethorpe staged in the studio and became famous for, these disarming pictures are marked by spontaneity and invention. Event Website
