From The Triangle To the Tiger: New York's Garment Center In American Popular Culture
(Chelsea Recreation Center, 430 West 25th Stree, New York, NY 10001) (7PM) This is a multimedia examination of an overlooked but vivid and fascinating aspect of our Popular Culture -- the popular take on New York's Garment Center during its peak years. This talk focuses on the Golden Age of the Garment Center, and its Pop Culture artifacts -- the novels, plays, songs, films, advertising and other popular imagery that tells the changing fortunes of the Garment Center. By turns informative, campy, bigoted and just plain naive, this imagery is deeply evocative of a once-vital City sector, now more a tourists' lure than a force in New York's life. (FREE)

Oh, Those Beautiful Weimar Girls
(La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, 74A East 4th St, New York, NY 10003) (10 PM - 11:10 PM Fri. & Sat. 8 PM - 9:10 PM Sun.) To celebrate one of the most successful shows of its fall season, The Club at La MaMa will re-mount The New Stage Theatre Company production of "Oh, Those Beautiful Weimar Girls." The piece is an evening of the music and dance associated with Anita Berber, the iconic actor/dancer/poet who epitomized for many the decadence of Weimar era Berlin. It is conceived and directed by Ildiko Nemeth. Texts are written by Mark Altman. Choreography is by Julie Atlas Muz and Peter Schmitz. Weimar cabaret goers pursued glamour and pleasure compulsively, as though excess might grant liberation from the perils of their time. Center Voices and The New York Historical Society present By His Own Design
(The New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024) (2 - 4pm) Center Voices and The New York Historical Society present By His Own Design. This film is a portrait of the self-taught artist, Emile Norman, who recently passed away at age 91 working until the end with the same passion for life, art, nature and freedom that inspired him through seven decades of a changing art scene and turbulent times for a gay man in America. The film shows Norman’s work glittering in Bergdorf Goodman’s windows, on chorus girls’ headdresses and winning rave reviews at New York gallery shows. After the screening, co-producers Michael Tucker and Jill Eickenberry will discuss their relationship with Emile Norman and the making of this documentary. (FREE) Event Website
