A Child of Our Time and Te Deum
(Carnegie Hall, 881 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019) (7pm) Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time (1941) is a unique oratorio, structured in three parts to emulate Handel’s Messiah and using traditional African-American spirituals in a form similar to Bach’s use of the chorale in his Passions, all with a decidedly twentieth-century musical language. The text of this stirring work reflects Tippett's pacifism and belief that people contain both "shadow and light." Soprano Nicole Cabell has performed this work to great critical acclaim and has made it a signature piece. She will be joined by Marietta Simpson, mezzo-soprano, Russell Thomas, tenor, and John Relyea, bass-baritone. ($10+) (212-247-7800) Event Website

(Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave, New York, NY 10003) (Thu - Sat 8pm, Sun 3pm) Unreachable Eden is a play about Polish Jewish lesbian Eve Adams, who ran a tearoom on Macdougal St. in 1926. Deported from the U.S. as an “undesirable alien,” she spent the 1930’s in Paris, selling banned books to English-speaking tourists. While Eve and her friends Henry and June Miller and Anais Nin enjoyed life in Paris, in Germany the Nazis were banning and burning books and implementing a war against Jews, homosexuals and others deemed “undesirable.” These parallel worlds collided during World War II, once again putting Eve in jeopardy as a Jew, a lesbian and an immigrant. Concentrating on 1987-1993, the period when the group truly changed the face of the AIDS crisis, the film utilizes oral histories from ACT UP members, as well as rare archival footage, to depict the efforts of ACT UP as it battled corporate greed, social indifference, and government negligence. The Gods of "The Odyssey" and their acolytes make small steps toward the evolution of ideas into a self-sustaining transformation from romance to reason and the super-nuclear force that transformation releases into the universe, joined by later re-examinations of those characters; this piece will invade the archetypes of human ancestry in order to re-align it with the impetus for human imagination.
