New York City Gay Men's Chorus
(New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 1 Center Street, Newark, NJ 07102) (7:30 p.m.) The world renowned New York City Gay Men's Chorus brings its hit concert, Take the A Train: The Music of Billy Strayhorn to NJPAC in an exclusive NJ appearance. From his jazz standards Satin Doll and Lush Life to the lesser known but no less remarkable compositions he created for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, this concert brings Billy Strayhorn's music to the stage as it's never been performed: by a full chorus and jazz band. Equally remarkable, Billy Strayhorn was an out, gay, African American jazz composer and musician in an era when the closet door was firmly shut, which makes this tribute to the legendary artist a perfect match for the NYCGMC. So hop on board the A Train for its only ride to Newark and swing it with the Chorus boys. ($36) (888-466-5722) Event Website

EDWARD THE KING
(TBG Theatre, 312 West 36th St, New York, NY 10018) (8pm and 2pm on Sundays) Beset by the duties of his birth and dominated by a heroic father, Edward looks forward to a life of apparent conformity and desperate subterfuge, until he meets Piers Gaveston in a dirty alley. It is love and rebellion at first sight. From then on, Edward steers a perilous course between desire and safety, which does not entirely end even when he becomes king, and faces not only the usual enemies of unconventional love, but his queen and her lover as well. Edward the King neatly straddles the fourteenth and twenty-first centuries, which manage to appear almost equally violent and inhospitable to love. Polaroids: Mapplethorpe
(Whitney Museum of American Art, 945 Madison Ave at 75th St, New York, NY 10021) This special exhibition traces Robert Mapplethorpe's use of instant photography from 1970 to 1975. Included are self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and portraits of lovers and friends including Patti Smith, Sam Wagstaff, and Marianne Faithfull. Many of these small, intimate photographs convey tenderness and vulnerability. Others depict a toughness and immediacy that would give way in later years to more classical form. Unlike the highly crafted images Mapplethorpe staged in the studio and became famous for, these disarming pictures are marked by spontaneity and invention. Event Website
