The Ghosts of 14th Street
(Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave, New York, NY 10003) (Thurs - Sat 8pm, Sun 3pm) Set in NYC in 1908, when 14th St was the entertainment capital of the city. It has both a gay male and a lesbian love story. In the Biograph Film Studio, the actors film scenes of a primitive one-reeler, while between takes they reveal their dreams, fall in love, betray each other, practice routines they hope will take them to live theatre, and go through many of the same emotions they express in the film. Later, the play recreates a typical evening of Vaudeville at the Olympic Theater that includes music, dance, comedy skits and female mimickry, as well as the finished film.
