The Bear’s satirical comedy is evident from the orchestra’s first notes. It is based on Chekhov’s vaudeville play, also titled The Bear. In contrast, The Scarf, by American composer Lee Hoiby, is a dark, verismo–like drama, reminiscent of Puccini’s Il Tabarro.
