CLAGS Seminars in the City: Black Gay Men in the Age of AIDS
(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (6pm) Nearly three decades since the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the United States, Black men who have sex with men (MSM) have represented a significantly disproportionate number of cases of HIV and AIDS. A key element in addressing HIV-related health disparities for Black gay men relates to the development of theoretical frameworks that are grounded within culturally relevant conceptualizations. Within this context, the objective of this seminar series is to better understand the role of stigma, marginalization, and structural inequalities in Black gay men's communities, which provide a theoretical framework to examine the complexities of the AIDS epidemic, as situated in the everyday, lived experiences of Black gay men. Co-Sponsored by the National Black Gay Men's Advocacy Coalition (NBMAC), New York State Black Gay Network (NYSBGN), and the Black Gay Research Group (BGRG). Center Voices presents author Martin Duberman
(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (6pm) Martin Duberman will be in conversation with novelist Sarah Schulman, followed by a signing of RADICAL ACTS which includes four brilliant, politically charged plays, brought together for a new generation of politically conscious theater. The collection begins with the documentary-based "In White America," which was named the Best Off-Broadway production of 1963, and which depicts the centuries old black struggle for freedom and human rights. The remaining three plays depict the lives of historically significant figures, interweaving true tales with Duberman's literary and political imaginings. Martin Duberman is Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at Lehman College and the Graduate School of the City University of New York and was the founder and first director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the CUNY Graduate School. He has authored over twenty books. ($10) Event Website
